Employee Spotlight - Kay - Guest Services

Lexus of Wayzata is excited to highlight Kay in our November e-Newsletter. Kay currently is responsible for Guest Services at the reception area of the dealership. She started with us as a Service Cashier three years ago and quickly advanced to Guest Services within the first three months of working at Lexus of Wayzata.
 
Kay stated that, “the favorite part of my job is getting to know our customers when they arrive at the dealership and making them feel welcome.” We are all very pleased with the standard Kay has set for helping our guests, making them feel at home and managing the phones at our Guest Services area. She is very determined to take care of every guest with the highest level of customer service.

Outside of work, Kay enjoys swimming, boating and most water activities, even fishing. She also had a family landscaping business so gardening will always be a hobby of hers. Her son has followed in her footsteps in Landscaping and recently completed a two year Heavy Equipment program at Central Lakes College in Staples, MN, near Brainerd, MN.

Kay grew up in Minneapolis and lived the last 21 years in Orono, MN. Prior to working for Lexus of Wayzata she was a flight attendant for 25 years with Northwest Airlines. She had the opportunity to take early retirement and stay at home with her son when he was a teenager. Kay enjoyed the extra time with her family.

Kay still has lifetime travel benefits and hopes to do more traveling in the coming years. Her favorite places to visit while working for the airlines were Boston, MA, Orange County, CA and London, England. She also misses traveling to warmer weather during the winter months in Minnesota.

We appreciate Kay’s dedication to Lexus of Wayzata and the customers she greets every day. Thank you Kay for all of your hard work; our Guest Services Representatives truly benefit from your experience in Customer Service.

Monday Maintenance: The Test Drive

The test drive is one of the most important parts of buying a car. No matter what the car reviews say, if a vehicle doesn't fit you and your lifestyle, you're going to become dissatisfied with it long before that payment book is empty. The test drive is your opportunity to make your own personal assessment in a thorough, hands-on manner. If you're attentive to the details here, you can quickly tell whether or not you and the vehicle are meant for a long-term relationship.


The test drive is your opportunity to make your own personal assessment in a thorough, hands-on manner. When it comes to test driving a vehicle, the more time behind the wheel on various roads, the better. If you can arrange to rent a vehicle that's similar to the one you're considering, it could be worth the cost to be able to spend several days in it. Besides helping you become familiar with the vehicle, a rental car—without the new-car gloss—can also provide a reality check by showing you what yours might be like a year or more down the road. Most often, though, you'll have to make the most of the dealership test-drive. Here are some tips:


Test Drive Tips

  • Don't rush. Allow yourself the time to do it properly. A car's true personality (the side you won't find on paper) really only shows up while driving. Also, make sure you can concentrate on the vehicle. If you feel self-conscious or distracted by the salesperson, politely ask him or her if you can drive alone.
  • Take another person to the dealership. Your friend can give you a second opinion, take notes while you're driving, or run interference with the salesperson, if necessary.
  • Start with the basics. How easy is it to get in and out of the vehicle? Some taller vehicles require a high step-up, which can be awkward for shorter people.
  • Does the car fit you? Adjust the seat and steering wheel until you're comfortable. Seats vary quite a bit from one vehicle to the next. A seat that fits one person perfectly may be contoured wrong for someone else. Over the long run, if a seat isn't just right, it can become a real annoyance. Also, can you reach the pedals comfortably without being too close or too far from the steering wheel?
  • How's the safety factor? Does the seatbelt fit comfortably across your body, without the shoulder belt cutting into your neck or riding too low? Are the belts adjustable? Is the headrest adjustable? Are there rear headrests?
  • Are the controls conveniently located? With all the other distractions of driving, you don't need hard-to-operate controls. Are the dash switches easy to reach and the gauges easy to read? Are commonly used controls positioned high enough so that you don't have to divert your eyes too far from the road?
  • Are there places to stow things? Can you fit CDs or cassettes in the center console? Are the cupholders secure and adjustable enough to fit a variety of sizes? Does the rear seat fold down for carrying larger loads in the trunk? On a minivan or sport-utility, can you open and close the rear door or liftgate easily?
  • How well can you see in all directions? Are there blind spots that could pose vision problems? Can you see the front of the hood well enough to use it as a gauge when parking? Try pulling into one or more parking spaces to see how easy it is to park.
  • Feel free to choose your own driving route so that you can take the car on a variety of road surfaces, from a high-speed highway to a patched-up back road. Is the ride smooth and comfortable or rough and bouncy? If you typically drive on hills, try to include them, too. A car that feels fine on level ground can run out of steam on hills.
  • How's the driveability? Is the vehicle easy to steer in a crowded lot without being too vague on the highway? On the road, does the car feel responsive and controlled or sluggish and wallowy? Can you accelerate onto an interstate or freeway comfortably without holding up traffic?
  • If you can find an empty stretch of road where you'll be safe, try applying the brakes hard a couple of times. How's the feel of the pedal? Do the brakes respond adequately in proportion to the amount of pressure you apply to the pedal?
  • Listen as you drive. How quiet or noisy is the overall experience? Noise typically comes from the engine, wind, and the tires on the road. Also, listen for any squeaks or rattles. There shouldn't be any in a brand new car.
  • If you'll be test driving several cars, try to do them in the same day so that your impressions are fresh. When evaluating the differences between vehicles, there's nothing more informative than being able to drive them back to back.

Help Your Odometer Reach 300,000 Miles

Five Maintenance Tips For Getting To 300,000 Miles

1. Keep your battery charged. This is especially important if you don’t drive your car that often. If you plan to let a vehicle sit for more than a couple weeks, you should invest in a “trickle charger,” or battery tender, which plugs into a regular household outlet and keeps your battery fully charged, automatically. I have a battery tender for my lawn tractor battery for winter months, and it guarantees a strong start in the spring.

2. Keep at least half a tank of gas in the car. Plenty of reasons not to let your car run on fumes, but one I had never considered before reading this article is that an empty gas tank is more prone to rust.  The rust can leach into your fuel and clog filters and fuel lines downstream. Rust could also eventually eat through your gas tank leaving a hole.  At today’s gas prices, who can afford for that to happen!

3. Don’t forget the tires. When you fill up your gas tank, or every couple weeks, whichever happens more frequently, be sure to check your tire pressure. If you drive an older vehicle like me you’ll need to pick up a tire gauge. Look at the label inside the door, or in your owner’s manual, to find the correct tire pressure for your specific model. Low tire pressure causes things like uneven wear on your tires and decreased gas mileage.

4. Change the oil. There is some debate in the frugal car owner world on whether or not you should change your oil as often as prescribed by car manufacturers (and those express oil-changing facilities). I’m no expert, but I think you should stay pretty close to the suggested schedule, only deviating a month or two, or a couple hundred miles. Peters agrees with me. Besides, a $30 oil change is much cheaper than a new engine, and if you are ultra frugal, you can even change your own oil!

5. Be kind to your clutch, and your brakes. If you drive a car with a manual transmission you know at some point you will likely have to replace the clutch. But you can extend the life of your clutch, and your brakes, by not riding either one for long periods of time, and by using your accelerator (or not using your accelerator) to coast a bit as traffic ebbs and flows.

Automobiles are becoming more and more expensive these days. In fact, next to buying a home, it is probably the largest single purchase most people will make in a lifetime. Use the steps above to increase the chances your vehicle will last well beyond your car loan, guaranteeing you many years of debt-free driving.

Keep Your Vehicle Chillin’ Rather Than Illin’: Winter Maintenance Tips That Increase Safety and Value

With the sun shining and the air conditioning cranked to the max, it may be hard to imagine how you or your vehicle will feel when it is below freezing. As the seasons change, however, it is time to think about getting ready for rain, snow, and ice because safety on the road becomes even more critical during the winter months. There are also proactive measures that you can take now that will save money while increasing the vehicle’s reliability and value no matter what Mother Nature unleashes.

Reviewing Maintenance Records

If you have not already recorded oil changes, tires, or other vehicle work that was completed during the spring and summer, now is a good time to get your log updated. This will enable you to reflect on the vehicle’s performance over the last few months. You should also review the previous winter’s records to see how the vehicle fared.

Having organized and accurate maintenance records does not just earn you a gold star; it provides the documentation you need to procure a higher sales price when you trade it in or find a private buyer. And even when you still own the vehicle, this record will provide an easy checklist to consult when the weather changes.

If your record keeping leaves a lot to be desired, there are services that you might consider using that provide these helpful reminders and maintain a real-time log on each of your vehicles, which can help you get ready for the winter.

Safety First

Tires are one of the most important places to check on your vehicle in preparation for winter because they will be coming into contact with all sorts of hazardous road conditions. Here are some suggestions:

  • Make sure they are in shape or replace them with a set of special winterized tires.
  • Check your vehicle’s alignment, especially if you have added a new set of tires or changed out a couple of them.
  • Ensure that the tires have the proper air pressure because this is what will provide you with good handling and traction control when it is most needed. It is critical that this pressure gets checked because the colder weather can cause contraction of the air within the tires, which can drastically alter the pressure without you even realizing it. Don’t sacrifice tire performance and your safety on the road!
  • You may need to consult your owner’s manual to guarantee that you have the right tires and pressure for winter driving conditions. Select a tire that has a tread that can hug and hold the road beneath the vehicle no matter what the conditions.
  • This is a good time to check that your snow chains are in good working order and within reach so you will not be stuck somewhere in the snow without them.

In terms of safety, it is also important to replace the wiper blades and top up the cold-weather wiper fluid, so that you can keep your windshield free of debris and other things that might inhibit your view while driving. Also remember to test and replace interior and exterior bulbs. Lights are essential when visibility is reduced during blinding rain and snow storms.

Looks Count Too!

Wet weather, snow, salt from the roads, and mud can harm your vehicle’s beautiful paint and, even worse, begin corroding its undercarriage. Here are a few suggestions to prep the exterior of your vehicle:

  • Start with a good detailing job on the interior and exterior during the autumn months.
  • Protect the vehicle’s exterior with a special wax to minimize the effects brought on by harsh conditions.
  • Use a heavy-duty window cleaner to remove all the dust and debris from the summer road trips.
  • Complete the process with a paint sealant that goes over the wax coat as an extra layer of defense.

Despite the bad weather, your vehicle will still want to shine and you want to make sure that you do not have to shell out on a new paint job in a few years.

Performance Boosters

After being run under the hottest conditions, your vehicle must shift gears so that performs well under some of the coldest ones. Your car will need to work harder to get started and maintain optimum performance when temperatures plummet below freezing. There are a number of check-ups to be done under the hood:

  • Check your battery and charging system, which will be strained once the cold weather starts.
  • Switch to a low-viscosity oil or synthetic oil because these oils can handle the severe cold and boost your vehicle’s ability to still get revved up quickly. Be sure to check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Examine all filters and hoses to make sure there are no leaks or cracks that will inhibit the vehicle.
  • Consider replacing antifreeze, which must be done every two years or 30,000 miles, because this will also affect vehicle performance.

Unique Winter Challenges

Winter means unique challenges, so you can plan well for these situations:

  • Make sure your care heater and defrosting system are working. Look over the vehicle’s thermostat and coolant level to make sure that the engine will be able to warm up properly. You may think that the coolant level is only important in the summer, but it can actually inhibit the performance of your heater.
  • There are times when you might get stuck so it is important to have your vehicle stocked with warm blankets, flares, gloves, a shovel, a de-icer, a crank radio, snacks, and first aid kit.

While there are specific requirements that your unique vehicle may have, the tips mentioned in this article provide an overview of some of the most important maintenance actions to take in the winter months. Monday Maintenance & Care – Exterior, Interior and Wheel Care

Interior

1. Remove dirt and dust using a vacuum cleaner. Wipe dirty surfaces with a

soft cloth damp with warm water.

2.When cleaning carpet and cloth interior, remove dirt and dust using a

vacuum cleaner. Apply a foaming-type carpet cleaner with sponge or

brush, allowing cleaner to work for a few minutes to loosen dirt.

Continue by rubbing carpet and cloth interior in a circular motion.

Wipe off excess with a clean cloth. If any dirt remains, repeat process.

Best results are obtained by keeping carpet and cloth interior as dry

as possible.

3.When cleaning leather, remove dirt and dust using a vacuum cleaner.

Using a small amount of neutral wool detergent mixed in water, apply to

leather using a sponge, rubbing in a circular motion. Wipe off excess

detergent and let leather dry in an open air location.


Exterior

1.Working from top to bottom, apply lots of low pressure water to vehicle

body, wheel wells and underside of the vehicle to remove any dirt or

dust. Wash the vehicle body using a soft sponge or soft cotton cloth with

mild car wash soap. Rinse off with water.

2.Wax vehicle paint if water does not bead on a clean vehicle surface.

Using a soft cotton cloth, apply car wax when the vehicle body is cool.


Wheels

1.Wait for hot wheels to cool before getting wheels wet.

2. Using a soft sponge or soft cotton cloth, apply same mild car wash soap

as used for the paint. Quickly rinse off soap with water. Using a soft

cotton cloth, apply car wax as used for the paint.

So, with this in mind, we decided to go to the source and talk to as many Lexus dealers as we could to find out if anything new is being offered these days, as well as to glean some good tips, from the Lexus dealers themselves, for making your service visits as convenient as possible:

Tip 1: Dealers are starting to go mobile.
Check with your dealer on their plans for smartphone-related services. Your dealer may have already mentioned Lexus’ new app, Enform Mobile, which, among other features, includes a “Dealers Nearby” tool that allows you to quickly find and call your nearest dealer. Also, for example, Lexus of Memphis offers its own customer app that, right now, largely showcases inventory; future features, like mobile appointment setting, is being worked on, says General Manager Bryan Smith.

Tip 2: Many dealers make house calls.
You may not need to go into the dealership for service at all—some dealers can actually come to you. “We offer a mobile van service for minor services, and a flatbed service for major services,” says Chris McCarty, vice president/general manager of Longo Lexus in Southern California. “Or, what we’ll do is drop off a courtesy car and pick up the car, then return it when it’s done.” Depending on the nature of the service, there may be no extra charge for this convenience.

Tip 3: Many dealers make sales calls.
Here’s a surprise. The previous tip about not having to come into the dealership also applies to sales. When looking for your next Lexus, you can request remote test drives, and even make your purchase and delivery completely off-site. It’s a perfect choice for customers for whom time is a precious commodity. “We work a lot of deals where the guests never have to come to the dealership,” says McCarty. “I have an owner here who’s had her car since 1998, and she’s never seen the dealership. She’s very busy, loves her LX, and loves Longo Lexus. But she’s never even seen it!”

Tip 4: Feel free to instruct your dealer.
One thing that virtually eliminates any misunderstanding on the Lexus dealer’s part is to hand over a written list of what’s wrong, and what you want done, instead of just a verbal summary, says Caren Myers, general manager of Fresno Lexus. Lexus dealers obviously won’t see this as any type of nuisance, and will take the time to go through any written instructions carefully. “It really helps to be clear, and communicate what your expectations are—because we intend to exceed them,” says Myers.

Tip 5: Take time to review the order.
Lexus drivers are smart. So be sure to take the time to read over the repair order and estimate before you sign it. Over and over, the dealers we spoke to mentioned this tip, and emphasized that no dealers will think you don’t trust them. But a simple slip of a pen could turn a 60,000-mile service into an oil change. “Just take a quick look,” says Myers. “Make sure that we’ve listened to you, and put down what you told us.”

Tip 6: Your dealer knows you, but always bring identification.
Picking up a courtesy car? Be sure to bring your driver’s license and insurance card, says Myers. Several dealers told us this is a common oversight. In a way, it’s understandable: Lexus dealers are so amicable that for many customers it can seem like borrowing a car from a friend. But they’re a business, and they have legal and contractual requirements preventing them from giving you a loan car without a license and insurance.

Lexus to Get Turbo-Charged Four-Cylinder Engine in 2014?

Last week at the Paris Motor Show, Lexus announced a new 2.5-liter hybrid engine that will be introduced into the lineup next year — now Toyota has released a couple more details:

An enhanced engine for use in hybrid vehicles, based on the 2.5-liter AR gasoline engine, adopts the Atkinson cycle and D-4S system. The enhanced engine achieves the world’s highest maximum thermal efficiency of 38.5 percent, realizing both high fuel efficiency and high output. Hybrid vehicle models equipped with the engine will be launched starting 2013.

Still no mention of the hybrid engine’s total system output, but early estimates have put it somewhere between 220-225 horsepower.

Also announced is 2.0L turbo-charged engine (!!!), set to debut in 2014:

Starting 2014, [Toyota] plans to launch a vehicle with a new 2.0-liter, turbo-charged AR engine, also based on the 2.5-liter AR gasoline engine. The new engine’s smaller displacement will provide higher fuel efficiency while the turbocharger will improve output.

While it remains unconfirmed, the 2.5L hybrid engine should be used in the next-generation IS and the current GS — considering compatibility, this would make both models eligible for the new 2.0L turbo-charged engine in 2014.

(The front-wheel drive ES and RX are also available with AR engines — the ES 300h and ES 250 in China, and the RX 270 in various markets. However unlikely, these two models could also be offered with the turbo-charged engine.)

These two engines are only part of the announcement made by Toyota regarding their technical development timeline — I recommend reading through the full press release, as it details much of the company’s future plans.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Windshield Wipers

Ah, windshield wipers. Like so many indispensable things in life, we tend not to appreciate them until they’re gone. But what if all drivers had a basic understanding of the wonderful world of wipers, enabling them to identify problems early and choose replacements wisely? We like that idea. Accordingly, we’ve put together a crash course that should bring your knowledge up to speed. Your automotive windows to the world require dependable wipers, so let’s learn more about these unsung heroes. 

Wiper Maintenance
The most important thing you can do for your current wipers is check their performance on a regular basis. Are they skipping or squeaking and leaving streaks on the windshield? Do you consistently notice rivulets that evade their sweep? Do they leave a film of moisture on the glass instead of wiping it clean and clear? If so, try cleaning the blades with a shop towel or sponge, and see if that helps. Remember, all it takes is one rainstorm or blizzard to turn worn-down wipers into serious safety hazards. You need to be able to depend on your wipers in the worst conditions, and that starts with being mindful of how they’re working every time you switch them on. By the way, don’t forget about your rear wiper, if you have one; it’s there for a reason, and it can be just as important as the ones in front.

 

Now, suppose you live in a temperate climate with little precipitation—or perhaps there are lingering signs of the dry season. You should still perform periodic inspections of your wiper blades, regardless of the weather. Is the rubber deteriorating? Can you see spidery cracks forming on the surface? If so, test your wipers immediately by spraying windshield-washer fluid and wiping it off, following the guidelines above for evaluating their performance. Even if your blades look great, it’s not a bad idea to do the spray-and-wipe test every week or two. You don’t want to wait for your wipers to go to pot before replacing them, so stay ahead of the curve and monitor their status year-round.

 

Buying New Wipers
Fortunately, wipers generally aren’t very expensive, so the “Better safe than sorry” approach won’t hurt your wallet here. As such, we recommend replacing your wipers if you have any reason to believe that they’re not up to snuff. Here are some general guidelines for the wiper-shopping process.

 

The first rule is to buy the entire assemblies, not just the blades themselves. Yes, it’s typically possible to keep your old assemblies, yank out the old blades, and shoehorn in new ones—and you don’t want to do that. Like we said, wipers are pretty affordable, so do your car a favor and start with a fresh set. We should add that there’s a new one-piece wiper design called “beam blade” that seamlessly integrates assembly and blade, so if you’ve got that kind, blade-only replacement isn’t even an option.

 

Second, make sure you’re getting the correct wiper specification for your car. Like most auto parts, wipers come in different shapes and sizes. It may sound trivial, but we’ve heard stories of mismatched wipers flying off their mounts at the worst possible time. Although your mechanic or auto-parts advisor should know what your car needs, it’s always a good idea to consult your owner’s manual as well, just to be safe.

 

Finally, don’t skimp on quality. Generic-brand wipers are cheaper, of course, but they can wear out in as little as a month or two of consistent use. If your manufacturer recommends a particular brand—German automakers often prefer Bosch wipers, for example—we say go for it. Otherwise, ask your trusted mechanic who knows your make and model inside and out. Don’t pay later to replace cheap wipers; pay now for a high-quality set, and you’ll reap the benefits down the road.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Fall Car Care

Just as we all change our clocks to “fall back,” and check the batteries in our smoke detectors, Fall is a good time to ensure our vehicles will carry us safely and dependably through another winter.

Here are the main things that are good to check this time of year:

Oil – Are you on track with your vehicle’s recommended oil change schedule? The cooler weather conditions can mean longer running times for a car’s engine due to prolonged idling while waiting for the vehicle to ‘warm up.’ Let’s face it, who likes sitting in a cold car?

Coolant – does your engine cooling system need to be checked? Many newer cars have lifetime fluid systems, but if you’ve had to have any repairs done that required “breaking the seal” you should have your system checked periodically to be sure all is well.

Windshield Washers – do you have plenty of fresh washer fluid to handle the season’s heavier usage, and are your wiper blades up to the demands of daily use? This is something you can check for yourself if you wish.
To check the condition of your washer fluid, simply remove the cap from the washer fluid reservoir and look down into it. If the fluid is cloudy or has visible debris in it, you will want to change it out right away. If it is transparent and the proper color just fill to the recommended level with the manufacturer approved fluid.
To check your wiper blades, examine for visible dry rot, cracks, splits or potential tears. Change if needed.

Tires – do your tires have good tread depth, and are they free of signs of wear? The wet conditions this time of year require good tires for maximum traction on wet roads. Since many signs of wear aren’t easily visible on a car parked in a garage or driveway, we’d be happy to check your tires for you.

Shocks and Struts – in addition to good tires, healthy shocks and struts are needed to maximize traction neccessary for safe driving in our soggy season.

Brakes – do you know if your braking system is ready for the abundant Eugene sunshine? Does your car take a little longer to stop? Do you feel a slight pull to one side or a wobble in your seat or steering wheel when you brake suddenly? Do you hear any squeal or squeak when braking?
Sometimes the squeak is due to the accumulation of brake pad ‘dust.’ This is normal for many vehicles. Just hose out your wheels as thoroughly as you can. (It’s best to allow to dry before driving.) If that remedies the squeak, good. If not, or you have any questions about your braking system’s performance, just bring your vehicle in and we’ll be happy to check things out for you.

Battery – more batteries fail in cold weather than any other time of year. It takes more power to start a cold engine, and cold also decreases the available cranking power the battery has available. Batteries don’t always die slowly. They can fail without warning, too. One customer’s car started normally one morning, then five hours later, the battery was completely dead. No lights were left on, etc. The battery, still under warranty, simply died.

Seals, Hoses and Belts – these are things that are usually tough to check yourself. An obvious sign of failing seals, hoses or belts is a leak or a squeak (in the case of a worn belt), but not always. A broken seal, hose or belt usually means you are stuck wherever you are when it happens. So, to prevent being stranded on a wet road a seasonal inspection of your belts, hoses and seals can help make sure you make it through the winter problem-free.

Headlights – are they pointing straight ahead like the should, and are they as bright as they ought to be? Do you have any dimmed or burned out bulbs? Is there condensation inside the headlamp housing? These are all indicators that your headlamps could need a little work to perform at their peak. After all, you’ll be depending on them more during the wetter, darker days and nights ahead."

Employee Spotlight - Mike Gleason

This month the Lexus of Wayzata Pre-Owned Department is proud to highlight Mike Gleason our Pre-Owned Sales Associate this month.

Since Mike started at Lexus of Wayzata, he has worked in the Pre-Owned De

partment. We will be celebrating his 7 years of employment on November 1st, 2012. Mike has always respected the high level of customer service Lexus of Wayzata expects from all our employees and he believes that is the only way to do business.

I asked Mike to tell me his favorite part about his position and he commented, “I enjoy meeting customers, building relationships and developing friendships with each and every person. I try to always take the time to hear about their life story and share a cup of coffee with them anytime they visit me at the dealership.”

Mike has had a successful sales career in our Department because he understands how to market himself and work with other employees as a team. I am sure he learned these skills in his previous career where Mike worked for 31 years in the Music Industry. He was a Director of National Accounts and previously the Detroit Sales Manager for a music company that worked directly with artists to promote and sell their music to large retail stores. Mike started his career in the music industry early in life in Detroit where he grew up. He was 15 years old and was working for bands and artists to sell their music to local stores.

Currently, Mike has lived in Minnesota for 22 years and has been married for 37 years to his wife Rebecca. They currently have three children and three grandchildren, with a new grandchild on the way this February.

Mike and his wife are extremely proud of their kids. Their oldest son Michael is a registered nurse and works in hematology/oncology at the University of Minnesota Fairview Hospital. Michael is married with a daughter and another one on the way.

Mike’s youngest son Nicholas graduated from St. Cloud State University and now works for Farmers Insurance. He is married with two sons.

Their daughter Michelle is currently completing a fellowship at the University of Minnesota in Cancer Research and is working on a Masters Degree in Clinical Research. Mike and Rebecca had one of their proudest parent moments when Michelle received her PhD in microbiology, immunology and cancer biology about 2 weeks ago. She has focused her research efforts on cancer in hopes to find a cure after her Uncle recently passed away from Cancer.

Mike spends as much time as possible outside of work with his family. He also enjoys exercising everyday and leading a healthy lifestyle. If you don’t catch Mike working out, you might find him riding his Harley on the Minnesota roads.

We have enjoyed having Mike in our Pre-Owned Department and look forward to all the new customers he will introduce to Lexus of Wayzata.

More Details on the Lexus LF-CC Coupe Concept

Motor Trend had an opportunity to talk with the Lexus Design group manager Takeshi Tanabe about the new LF-CC concept that debuted yesterday, and it’s definitely worth reading — here a couple quotes:

Unlike other Lexus hybrids, the body design doesn’t aim to make explicit the hybrid powertrain or fuel-economy potential. “We used to show the cars were hybrid, but now this is more emotional and sporty,” says Lexus Design group manager Takeshi Tanabe. The long nose will also house gasoline engines, which at present consist of a version of the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four (IS 250), 3.5-liter V-6 (IS 350), and the 5.0-liter V-8 in the IS F in the U.S. This would be the first IS hybrid.

Tanabe explains, “In the past, Lexus was about reliability, quality, comfort, and silence. We still have that, but we are adding emotion through the design to attract younger buyers. From now, from the new GS and this CC Concept, we’re adding excitement.”

“Maybe some will like this car; maybe some won’t,” says Tanabe. “I don’t want to say we’ll offend people who don’t like it, but I do want to be distinctive.”

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Car Starter Problems

A car's starter is one of its more important engine components. It is a small electric motor that engages the engine when the driver turns the key. Once the engine begins to run, the starter disengages. A bad starter is just one possible reason an engine won't start, but there are symptoms that can help pinpoint a problem with a starter.

Clicking

  • One of the most common symptoms of a bad starter is a clicking noise when turning the key to the "on" position. The clicking comes from under the hood and should be clearly audible since the engine won't even begin to turn over. If the engine does begin to turn over but never starts or if there are multiple clicks until the driver releases the key, the starter is actually functioning and the problem is elsewhere.

Headlights

  • Headlights that are dim before trying to start the engine indicate a bad battery and the starter might be fine. However, when the lights shine at full brightness but become very dim when the driver turns the ignition key, the starter is almost certainly the problem. In this situation, the alternator is sending electricity to the starter, reducing that available for the lights. Even with the boost, the starter is unable to start the engine.

Smoke

  • Smoke coming from under the hood can also indicate a faulty starter. This can occur when the starter motor burns out. If possible, open the hood and try to pinpoint the source. It may be possible to see smoke coming from the starter, which is in a metal cylinder mounted on the engine. Even once smoke clears, the starter may have a burnt smell.

Heat

  • A faulty starter can cause battery terminals or wires to heat up. Like the dim headlight symptom, this comes from the alternator trying to send extra electricity to the starter. Always exercise care when handling battery terminals. If they cool down after the driver releases the key, the likelihood of a starter problem increases.

To ensure nothing gets left at home, make a list of things you need to take to the tailgate party. Be sure to put your game tickets on the list too!

 

Have a Tailgating Theme


Think up a creative theme for your tailgate. If it's Thanksgiving, bring a turkey. If it's Christmas, bring a tree. Or, base your theme and decorations on the opponent. For example, you might have Cajun food against the Saints, Philly cheese steaks against the Eagles, or fish against the Dolphins.

 

Dress for the Occasion


Dress appropriately for several hours outdoors -- and be prepared for drastic temperature changes. And don't forget to wear comfortable shoes.

 

Show Some Tailgating Team Spirit


Show your team spirit... Wear team colors. Tailgaters are usually the biggest and best fans! After all, to become the ultimate tailgater, you'll want to stir up some tailgater's envy!

 

Timing is Everything


Get there early. You'll want to arrive 3-4 hours before game time to beat the crowd and claim your turf. And, plan to stay late so as to not miss a moment of the post-game enthusiasm.

 

Location, Location, Location


Set up your tailgate party near a grassy area, or bring a roll of Astroturf to set up at the end of the row -- for a more comfortable atmosphere with lots of room to socialize. Parking at the end of a row can also give you more partying space.

 

Tailgating in Parking Lots


Serious tailgaters choose a parking lot that has a view of the stadium if on-site parking is not available. Since the stadium is your Mecca, you need to be able to see it so you can bow to it occasionally.

 

Mark Your Spot At The Tailgating Party


A flag or team pennant on a tall pole helps people locate the party and makes a statement of team spirit.

 

Seating Arrangements


Don't worry about bringing chairs for everyone. Those who want to sit will bring their own chairs.

 

Generating Power


Serious tailgaters bring a small generator for powering a TV, stereo system or electric space heater during cold weather games.

 

Timing the Eats


Make sure your food is ready 1 to 2 hours before game time, so you have enough time to eat, clean up and find your seat in the stadium.

 

Put out the Fire


If you're using a charcoal grill, bring along extra water to douse the embers and a plastic garbage bag to put the cold coals in.

 

Be Smokey's Best Friend


Make sure that you have some way of extinguishing and throwing away your hot coals. Whatever you do, dispose of firewood or charcoal briquettes properly. Some stadiums have a designated place for hot ashes, but do not dump them in the grass or in trash bins.

Garbage In, Garbage Out


Bring your own lawn-size trash bags, because there never seem to be enough garbage receptacles on hand.
